Becker Boards is the largest privately held billboard company in Phoenix.  It was founded by Mark Becker, a former real estate lawyer and developer and entrepreneur Joseph White.  In Phoenix, the company has almost 200 displays with a focus high profile digital and static bulletins along the I-10, I-17, Loop 101, Loop 202, US 60 and Route 143 freeways.  Recently, it was selected by the SRP-MIC tribe through a competitive bidding process to operate all the tribe’s billboards in the Scottsdale area. The company also has new supergraphics in Miami and bulletins and wallsigns in the Los Angeles and San Francisco markets.  Todd Scanlin is the firm’s national sales director.  Insider interviewed Mark Becker.

Mark, how did you enter the out of home advertising business?

I backed into it as a landlord to OutFront on a commercial building that I owned on I-10 in Phoenix.

How are the California, Arizona and Florida markets different?

There are a lot of similarities except California has some unique hurdles associated with its ban against freeway billboards on “landscaped freeways” and murals in Miami can be operated only by those who own or more of the 45 mural permits that the city has issued.

What are the challenges of operating a billboard company in an extremely, sunny hot climate like Phoenix.

The challenges come from the municipalities and defense played by our large corporate competitors.  The sunny weather is great and we haven’t had any issues with our digital displays due to the heat.

Who’s digital billboards do you use and what have you learned?

We use both Watchfire and Samsung/Prisimview. Both have been great.
