Josh and Ashlee Strong

Josh and Ashlee Strong have been in the billboard business for almost 15 years. Originally named Greater Vision Outdoor and concentrated in Monroe and Barren counties in Kentucky, we rebranded as Apple Outdoor in early 2021 and have since expanded and acquired billboards for coverage in 12 counties in two states. We serve south central Kentucky and northern Tennessee with affordable, effective static and digital outdoor advertising.

How did you get started in the billboard business?

We were looking to advertise another business and a local painter suggested we do billboards, of which he hand painted us two. The business we were advertising blossomed and that sparked the idea to build more. Fast forward 14 years and counting and we continue to grow thanks to the insight of Carlie Likens and his help! Since late 2022, we have been blessed to welcome our new Vice Chair Abby Medford. Her intelligence, tenacity, and grit has catapulted her from sales to executive in just a matter of months and we are excited about where she will lead our company in the future.

Can you tell us a little about your inventory?

We have 140 static panels and 22 digital panels, making us the 3rd largest independent billboard company in KY and in the top 200 in the United States. We have since retired the hand painted metal signs we originally had, but we have them tucked away for safe keeping. We were one of the first independents in KY to have digital advertising and love the ability to mix static and digital to cater to each advertiser’s needs.

You have several digital structures. How do you determine which sites are best for developing digitals?

The basic metrics—saturation, stopped traffic, impressions, and visibility—determine digital versus static. We love a great mixture of each but with digital, the technology is so amazing and continues to amaze us with its growth every time we install a new board. Customers love them.

What is one unique thing about the market you serve?

Our market is unique because we rely heavily on locals, not regional or national marketing. You hardly ever see a national brand on our boards, which means we forge local relationships and, for the most part, cater to our friends, families, and coworkers here in our very own back door. That ties us to our community and makes us more about relationship and making these boards most effective, rather than just business. And we know they work. We still use them for our other businesses as well!
