94Outdoor is constructing two billboards in Waite Park, Minnesota: a double sided digital billboard and a double sided static billboard.  Insider talked with the company’s owners: Jeff and Stacy Blonigen.  Construction is expected to be complete later this month.

How did you get interested in the out of home business?

We’ve owned some acreage along I-94 in Waite Park, MN for several years and kept talking about what made the most sense to do with it.  After researching options, we decided on billboards.  There is some pretty impressive data out there about the OOH industry and its growth that caught our attention.  Also, Stacy has a marketing background and believes in the effectiveness of OOH, so this seemed like a great fit.

Tell us about your sign location.

We truly have one of THE best locations in the Greater St. Cloud, MN metro area.  Located on I-94 in between the exits for Hwys 15 and 23 in Waite Park, which is about 60 miles NW of Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Our location has approximately 185,000 impressions weekly in each direction!  And, being the only boards for miles along that stretch of interstate we are going to stand out and get noticed!

What was the permitting process like?

Long!  When we started researching this opportunity several years ago our acreage wasn’t in an approved billboard zone.  We had to work with our local municipality and Planning Commission to get our land added as an approved area first.  That was the longest part.  After that, the remaining permits weren’t too difficult to obtain, just took time to complete all of the required paperwork and attend the appropriate meetings.

Whose digital sign are you using and what have you learned.

After researching options, we chose the Lightking Air Series.  In talking with their team, they seemed to be trying to bring new innovations to their product, and being environmentally conscious, we liked the low energy consumption of their boards.

Insider will check back with the Blonigens to follow their progress in coming months.
