Central Atlanta Progress Proposes New Digital Sign Ordinance

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-11-34-34-amCentral Atlanta Progress is taking the lead on a proposed ordinance that would allow—and even encourage—expansive new digital billboards and flashing signs in the area that includes the CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, and the sports arenas.

The proposal, introduced at Atlanta City Council last week, would designate a so-called “arts and entertainment district” covering much of the downtown central business district with its own set of signage rules and guidelines.

The proposed plan allows sign companies and property owners to install large, digital billboards in exchange for allowing those signs to be programmed by a quasi-governmental district authority during major downtown events. In this case, that authority would be the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District, which is managed by Central Atlanta Progress.

The CAP is pushing the proposal as an effort to create a more light and bright public space for the city and to drive more economic activity downtown. It also will help create energy around major sporting and music events.
