KRCR News reports of an agreement between Caltrans and Outfront Media to remove 10 billboards along a Highway 101 safety corridor area of focus.
The project is designed to:
- Improve safety and reduce delays at intersections.
- Reduce operational conflicts.
- Resurface, restore, and rehabilitate the existing Route 101.
- Extend or construct right-turn acceleration and deceleration lanes.
Myles Cochrane, Public Information Officer with Caltrans District 1 was quoted as saying, “We’ve been working really hard on finding a solution all summer and so I’m pleased that we finally did that.”
The Humboldt County Association of Governments is pleased with the agreement too. They said it will benefit the Humboldt Bay Trail that is in the planning stages and some of these billboards would have been in the way.
The removal will also meet one of the California Coastal Commission’s conditions for permitting the Eureka-Arcata Route 101 Corridor Improvement Project, which aims to reduce collisions on the corridor.
“We’ve been working with HCOG and Eureka and Arcata on some safety improvements along that corridor and this is another improvement,” explained Cochrane.
Caltrans said it expects to have all ten billboards removed by the end of this year.
At the time of the article what compensation Outfront Media receives in the agreement was not available.
Insider will update as more information is available.
