Billboards over Covid but Street Furniture, Transit and Place Based Lag

A rising tide lifted all out of home sectors in 2021.  Here are the 2021 annual US revenue figures broken down by sector.

  • Street furniture revenue grew 43% in 2021, followed by billboards (up 17%), transit (up 11%) and place-based (up 3%).
  • Roadside billboards have recovered and are 1% above where they were pre-covid, but the other out of home sectors are still down.  Street furniture is down 27% from a pre-covid high.  Transit is down 46%.  Place based is off 66%.  Now you know why Lamar stock (e.g. roadside billboards) is trading 23% above where it was pre-covid while OUTFRONT stock (two-thirds billboards, one-third transit prior to covid) is 12% below it’s pre-covid high.
