Atlantic Magazine has a rambling piece called “The Call of the Billboard”. The article is part of Atlantic’s Object Lesson essay series which discuss “the hidden lives of ordinary things.”
The article starts with a description of the Mosquito Killer billboard, drifts through a history of billboards in the US, various billboard reform efforts, the Highway Beautification Act and ends with a discussion of the non-billboard communities of Sao Paulo, Chennai, Vermont, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska.
The tone is mild antagonism.
