You need to remind your regulators that billboards have a valuable function in providing a channel for public speech. Here are three examples Billboard Insider noticed in the past month. The first example is a straightforward election ad in St James Minnesota.

The second example comes from Spokane, WA, where a private citizen Spokane purchased anti-Ice billboards. The billboards were amplified by local news station.
And in Elkhart, Indiana an advocacy group purchased 6 billboards to encourage RV manufacturers to change their purchasing habits to be less reliant on a wood that comes from Amazon rainforests.
Billboard Insider’s Take: Billboard perform a valuable function as an outlet for public speech. This is especially important in a day when newspapers have fewer readers and fewer people are listening to the radio or watching TV news. Don’t be shy about reminding your towns politicians and regulators about this and it’s a good idea to run public service ads promoting community announements and community events on your billboards when you have vacancies.
