The the cost of fabricating and installing a billboard has nearly doubled over the past couple years. That means the $40,000 structure that you put up two years ago is going to cost $80,000 today. Billboard Insider talked with some fabricators to get an update on billboard structure costs.
- Steel prices climbed sharply over the past couple years as covid shut down factories and strained supply chains. Tariffs haven’t helped either by limiting competition from overseas. Prices took a further leap due to the war on Ukraine but rolled steel prices have finally begun to decline. See chart below.

- Plate steel is a key component for billboards. The fabricators tell Billboard Insider that plate steel prices are holding constant which is a change from the past year when they were seeing weekly plate steel increases. Prices aren’t dropping yet and it will take a while for dropping prices to impact billboard costs due to higher priced inventory in the system.
- Fabricators are busy with 8-10 week backlogs for billboard structures. There is strong demand for projects involving the conversion if static billboards to digital.
- There is a shortage of qualified installers.
