Billboard Structure Costs Levelling?

The the cost of fabricating and installing a billboard has nearly doubled over the past couple years.  That means the $40,000 structure that you put up two years ago is going to cost $80,000 today.  Billboard Insider talked with some fabricators to get an update on billboard structure costs.

  • Steel prices climbed sharply over the past couple years as covid shut down factories and strained supply chains.  Tariffs haven’t helped either by limiting competition from overseas.  Prices took a further leap due to the war on Ukraine but rolled steel prices have finally begun to decline.  See chart below.

  • Plate steel is a key component for billboards.  The fabricators tell Billboard Insider that plate steel prices are holding constant which is a change from the past year when they were seeing weekly plate steel increases.  Prices aren’t dropping yet and it will take a while for dropping prices to impact billboard costs due to higher priced inventory in the system.
  • Fabricators are busy with 8-10 week backlogs for billboard structures.  There is strong demand for projects involving the conversion if static billboards to digital.
  • There is a shortage of qualified installers.
