If you have a static billboard plant with old, inefficient lights you should consider upgrading to high efficiency LED lights. Insider achieved a 44% return on capital by replacing the old lights on a 14 by 48 static billboard with high efficiency Cree LED’s. Here’s the analysis.
- The 14 by 48 billboard on the right had 8 old lights with power bill averaging $337/month.
- Insider spent $5,726 retrofitting the sign to high efficiency Cree Cool White 90 High Output Billboard Luminaires lights purchased from Formetco. The lights cost $4,126 and the light installation cost $1,600.
-
The new lights reduced power use by 63% from 75 kwh per day to 28 kwh per day.
- Electricity costs declined by $211.25/month for an annual savings of $2,535.
- The return on capital (electric savings of $2,535 divided by $5,726 cost of retrofit) was 44%.
Insider wishes to thank Formetco for help on this project. There aren’t very many business investments which can generate a 44% return on capital. Let Insider know if you’ve done a lighting retrofit and what the results have been.
