The Toledo Blade reports the death of David Leigh Root, the chief executive of Toledo based Root Outdoor at age 67. The family-owned company operated 2,000 billboards on highways in northwest and north-central Ohio before it was sold to Lamar in the mid-2000’s. David Leigh Root took over the business from his father Robert Root who founded the firm in 1965, Root served on the board of directors of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America.
OAAA President Nancy Fletcher tells Insider, “Dave Root was a wonderful guy. He was the quintessential family-owned operator who built a significant billboard company based on taking care of advertisers, his employees, and the local community.”
In September 2016 the University of Toledo dedicated a David Leigh Root bridge on Stadium drive.

Dave was a great boss!!! I’ve tried to pattern my business somewhat after how he did it. It was a great family friendly and family oriented biz. I am sad to hear this news. My work for him changed my life and MUCH for the better!!! I owe a lot to the Root brothers, especially Dave.
