FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Charlotte, NC – 1.14.26 – ArtPop is proud to announce it has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in support of its flagship 2026 Artist Cohort, a nationally recognized public art program, now in it’s 13th year.
This prestigious federal investment affirms ArtPop’s mission to amplify the regions creative spirit, bringing creativity by local artists into shared public spaces and strengthening the local arts ecosystem. The 2026 Artist Cohort will support 19 adult artists and, for the first time, 5 high school seniors, expanding the program’s reach to include more emerging young creatives at a pivotal moment in their artistic journeys. In the past, ArtPop’s Artist Cohort program, supported one HS Senior.
“This grant is both a celebration and an invitation,” said Wendy Hickey, Founder and Executive Director of ArtPop. “We are deeply grateful to the NEA for recognizing the power of public art and artist/community-centered programs. At the same time, this moment invites our entire community to rally around the arts and continue investing in the creative heartbeat of our city.”
The 2026 Artist Cohort will once again place original artwork on billboards in highly visible public spaces, literally changing the look and feel of Charlotte while providing artists with professional development, exposure, and meaningful economic opportunity.
The open call for local artists to apply will launch on February 23rd, with a four-week application window, closing on March 22. Adult artists and high school seniors living in the Charlotte region are encouraged to apply. The call will be found at CallForEntry.org.
While the NEA grant represents an important milestone, it covers approximately 22% of the Artist Cohort program budget and 8% of ArtPop’s overall annual operating budget. Continued community support, from individuals, businesses, and civic partners, remains essential to fully realize the program’s vision and ensure its long-term sustainability.
“This is a powerful example of national recognition meeting local impact,” Hickey added. “When our community shows up alongside institutions like the NEA, the arts don’t just survive, they thrive.”
ArtPop invites Charlotte to celebrate this achievement, champion local artists, and take part in shaping a more vibrant, creative, and connected city.
