Today out of home leasing and development expert Andy Goodman talks about an advantage of left-hand read billboards
Andy, what do you think of left hand reads?
I’m a strong believer in the value of left-hand reads. They offer a unique advantage on curved freeways—especially when the road bends to the right. As you move through the curve, a left-hand read stays perfectly positioned in the center of your windshield, remaining visible for the entire duration of the turn.
Left-hand reads are also especially effective in places like California, where freeways often have many lanes. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been driving in the fast lanes—the number one or two lanes—and found that billboards on the right side of the road are blocked by 18-wheelers or other large vehicles. Those big rigs typically occupy the slower lanes to the right, and their height completely obstructs the view of right-side signage.
Meanwhile, a left-hand read remains unobstructed. Because larger vehicles rarely occupy the far-left lanes, the visibility of left-hand billboards stays wide open. On major highways and high-lane-count freeways, that clear, reliable sightline gives left-hand reads a significant edge over their right-hand counterparts.
