Billboard Insider talked with out of home leasing and development expert Andy Goodman about trends in billboard development and leasing.
You’ve been busy developing signs
Yes we’ve completed a few digital signs for clients. The most recent one was in the city of Yucaipa on the 10 Freeway for Leonard and Company. This is a new 14 x 48 double face digital sign. In the City Vacaville in Northern California on the 80 freeway, we just built a double face 14 x 28 digital billboard for the NutTree and it’s now being operated by a Capital Outdoor from the east coast, and from what I understand they’re doing a very good job. I also finished a double face 14 x 48 digital billboard in Fullerton CA on the 60 Freeway for Lamar. So my clients are definitely keeping me busy.
What trends you seeing in billboard leasing
I’m receiving more and more calls from property owners and developers interested in building their own billboards on their own property. They’re interested in hiring me to do the government affairs, the real estate, the operations and the building of the sign. I explain to them the long process, sometimes up to 3 to 5 years, that it takes to entitle these projects. We discuss the fees and the cost to build a digital billboard of approximately $500,000 to $1,000,000. At that point some agree to move the project forward, others decide they want to entitle the project but either Lease or sell the project before its time to build.
