Steve, tell us about the history of Legends Outdoor?

We started Legends Outdoor in 2005. Previously I had worked at Clear Channel as VP of Sales for the DC-Baltimore market and Steve Sarkady was new to the industry after a successful career in computer sales. Both of us were looking for a change and to work for ourselves after years in the corporate world. We began leasing and secured 10 permits in the Martinsburg, WV market. We constructed our locations using our HELOC’s and family investment money. We then partnered with Insite Mediacom to sell our signs to them and build a plant for them consisting of over 350 faces in West Virginia and Western Maryland. The past few years we have continued to build signs in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virgina, some with Insite and some on our own. Today we are mainly focused on digital billboard conversion and construction in South Carolina, Georgia, PA and WV.

What’s it like to have a business partner that has been a friend since childhood?

It makes it very easy to work together. We grew up a block apart, played soccer together thru High School and have stayed close since 2nd grade. It is very easy to trust a partner who you have known most of your life.

SDC13245Can you provide us with a summary of your plant?

We currently own or own in partnership 104 digital faces and 30 static faces. We also manage ad sales and development for Insite in Clemson, SC, Atlanta, the West Virginia – Maryland market and the largest digital sign south of Time Square in Baltimore for an independent owner.

Looks like you have structures that are digital? Any plans to add additional digital signs to your inventory?

We now own 6 digital signs and partner in ownership of 4 others. Yes, we plan to construct as many digitals as we can the next few years. However finding new locations to permit is very difficult. We focus on A locations in small to medium markets.

2aWhich digital sign manufacturers do you use and what has been you experience?

We have used Daktronics for 2 and Yesco for 1. We  now exclusively use Formetco for all of our digital signs. We have found they have the best product, prices and service. They have been very important to our growth into digital signs.
