All You Need to Know About Vinyl – Part 3

Billboard Insider’s Dave Westburg moderated a panel  titled All You Need to Know About Vinyl at last week’s IBO show.  The panel included Robert Arnold of Associated Posters, Alex Job of OAI Visual Technologies and Cody Golliher of Circle Graphics.  Yesterday the panel discussed technology, sustainability and what to do with old vinyl.  Today the panel talks about shipping costs and a challenging vinyl job.

Talk about shipping costs.

Robert Arnold: Volume and combining shipments are a great way to save but the truth is UPS and Fedex increase rates every year between 5-10%.  We work hard negotiating against their increases but the UPS strike this year will make it hard get them to budge in negations.

Alex Job: Shipping costs are and will continue to increase UPS/ Fed ex. Follow-each others rate increases.  Reduction in costs can be realized if you can wait to bundle at least 10 boards at a time so we can send on a pallet using freight carriers.

Cody Golliher:  Circle Graphics is always working with UPS and freight companies to try to keep costs down. We are now using bags to help save on weight and costs for bulletins and posters. In order to keep ship dates and posting dates, we ship as soon as the order is ready vs delaying a order to ship with others.

Tell us about  challenging vinyl printing job your company fulfilled.

Robert Arnold: There are numerous challenging jobs.  In my roll in the company, the ones that go smooth are quickly forgotten.  The ones that go wrong are ones I sadly remember.  So I only remember the ones that we have struggled to get right in the past.  One that haunts me still to this day is our first huge backlit structure for Outfront in Los Angles.  It took us three times to get it right.  That was a very expensive learning curve fraught with many mistakes that helped us moving forward but was the source of many sleepless nights for me and my crew.

Alex Job: Recently we completed the installation of the branding of the MLB Allstar Game in Seattle Top of the Space needle. Height of the Space Needle is 605 ft high x 138ft wide.  We used a climber that roped off from the top of the structure to effect the installation

Cody Golliher:  We look at every complex job we get from customer service, prepress and production perspectives. We’ll review any special specifications requirements such as overall size, seam placement and unique finishing such as t-pockets. By reviewing these carefully we put ourselves in a great position to deliver an exceptional print with minimal mistakes.

Who else besides out of home companies is using vinyl?

Robert Arnold: Lumber wrap and commercial roofing are big consumers of PE and PVC vinyl.  The only difference between what they use and what we use is one step.  Our material has to be treated to accept ink.

Alex Job:  Major league sports uses vinyl.  The NFL, MLB and MLS use vinyl for field walls.  Formula One and E formula-Nascar use vinyl for on track branding

Cody Golliher:  We work with many other industries including stadiums, music venues, airports, universities and fashion brands
