Growing from deep roots within the billboard industry, OutdoorLink, Inc. is an admirable US manufacturing success story.  Family owned and operated since 2007, OutdoorLink, Inc. has placed a firm footprint on the timeline of billboard lighting controllers.  Dwight Jennings, CEO and creator of the SmartLink Lighting System utilized the knowledge gained from 40 years in the Out of Home Advertising industry to create a legacy and a valuable contribution to the Billboard industry.

OutdoorLink, Inc. was formed to solve ongoing and costly issues Jennings observed and experienced first hand as owner of Jennings Outdoor Advertising.  After selling his billboard company in 1997, Dwight took the ‘pains’ plaguing every owner in the industry to create a solution that reduces maintenance and utility costs, while providing remote lighting control.

The SmartLink System has been implemented by hundreds of OOH advertising companies, enabling control over tens of thousands billboard structures.  Revolutionizing methods of operations management, the SmartLink System provides a link for owners and managers to individual structures, as well as entire markets.  Insider uses and endorses the SmartLink System.  Insider spoke with Dwight Jennings on a recent visit to the company’s headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama.

Dwight, how does the SmartLink System work?

Our system is capable of controlling all faces independently, thus giving you total control of your structure.  The SmartLink instantly relays the status of your structure to your computer or smartphone, providing control and monitoring at your fingertips.  We continue to establish relationships with multiple cellular companies to insure seamless coverage in the US.  The reasoning behind cellular, as opposed to wifi or the internet is increased security and reliability.  You can control your billboard lights by signing into our system from your computer or by using the SmartLink App on your phone.

What are some of the benefits of the SmartLink System?

  • Increased customer satisfaction. The system notifies you the instant there is a problem with your structure, or its lighting. No more phone calls from clients telling you that the lights are out on a billboard.  The SmartLink Solution also generates daily Proof of Performance reports for customers.
  • Reduced maintenance expenses. You won’t have to roll a truck to change your lighting schedules or for Daylight Saving Time because you can change and control the units from your computer or smartphone.  The system also tells you exactly what’s wrong at the structure so your maintenance people arrive with the right parts and tools.
  • Smartlink 24/7 call center

Reduced utility costs. The SmartLink System turns signs on and off based on the sunrise and sunset of the structure’s latitude and longitude, which reduces power costs.  It also allows you to turn the sign completely off for unsold faces or PSA’s to save 100% on utility consumption.

  • Security alerts. The SmartLink System alerts you whenever anyone tries to tamper with a box.
  • Our system is capable of controlling static, digital, tri-face, solar structures, as well as an application for security camera monitoring and other commercial applications.

How do you handle installations?

We have three staffed electricians and over 35 subcontractors who are licensed to install the SmartLink System anywhere in the United States.  We also install our system in Europe, China, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Does the SmartLink work on my digital or solar powered billboard?

The Smartlink System can remotely manage digital billboards.  Smartlink enables you to remotely reboot or shutdown a digital billboard in the event of garbled content, power issues, frozen screens, or hacked content, which eliminates a truck roll for a manual reboot.  The system also allows you to remotely control brightness to comply with local sign ordinances.  Our system also handles the management of solar powered billboards

You’re a family firm.  Who’s in the business?

My wife, Jan and I own the business.  I’m the President & CEO and Jan is CFO.  Our son, DJ is our Billboard Sales Manager and our daughter Meagan is Director of Marketing and Advertising.  Franklin Olive our Vice President & General Manager has been with OutdoorLink, Inc. since the company’s incorporation.  We consider all of our employees to be family.
