A Proposal To Add Digital Boards In Part Of Arizona

Arizona State Senator Sonny Borrelli is proposing to amend a 2012 law which limits digital billboards to a defined area of central and southwest Arizona.

Those limits were crafted following negotiations between the sign industry and “dark sky” advocates, including astronomers who said they did not want a new source of light pollution. The 2012 deal followed an appellate court ruling that internally illuminated billboards with changing messages were illegal along state highways.

Tuscon.com reports that Borrelli’s proposal would stretch from near the Hoover Dam, near Laughlin, NV,  east out I-40 past Kingman and south past Lake Havasu City.

Borelli indicates that the area considered should not effect the Lowell Observatory located in Flagstaff.

The measure has not been scheduled for a hearing.
