The Mt Airy News reports that the Mt Airy, North Carolina town commissions have voted to relax sign code rules which were approved in July. The commissioners voted to:
- Require non-conforming signs to be taken down or replaced with a confirming sign if a site is unoccupied for two years. The original rules required the non-conforming sign to be taken down or replaced if a site was unoccupied for 90 days.
- Require digital signs to be turned off from midnight to 5am. The previous rules required signs to be turned off from 10pm to 7am.
- A reduction in the minimum digital flip from 30 seconds to 8 seconds.
Insider’s take: The three changes are reasonable. Requiring non-conforming signs to be taken down when a property is vacant for 90 days amounts the same thing as requiring signs to come down every time a property changes hands. A 90 day sale of commercial real estate is normal. An 8-10 second digital flip is normal for most digital sign codes.
