Work Smarter With Daktronics: Sign Legislation

Roger is an expert on digital sign legislation and regulation. Nearly 10 years ago he was hired to build and manage the Signage Legislation department of Daktronics.

Here are a few take aways from the Daktronics webinar on Sign Legislation.

Areas of focus included:

  • Brightness
  • Perceived movement of a digital sign
  • Traffic Safety Concerns

Brightness

  • Make sure you educate yourself on industry standards before you meet with your local jurisdiction.
  • .3 ft. candles above ambient light level is becoming standard, though some jurisdictions still use Nits.

Perceived Motion

  • Make sure to point out differences in movement between on-premise and off premise signage.
  • Sometimes a jurisdiction is not aware of industry requirements to provide static images.  Good to bring a visual aid to demonstrate.

Traffic Safety Concerns

  • Important to build a record of traffic safety with digital signage.
  • Provide both statistical and and human factor study information. Both show digital billboards are well within acceptable ranges.

  • Never forget to share how the community will benefit from digital signage.

  • Benefits to local business through advertising.  Helps to have local business people in the meetings to share the importance of the signage to their business.

From an overall legislative standpoint Roger was upbeat on the future for digital signage.  There are federal digital signage regulations in place and the recent appellate win on the Scenic America case bodes well for the industry.

Forty state governments have accepted and have specific regulations on digital signage.

Last words of wisdom:  Make sure you have an approved permit before ordering your digital sign.
