Stein Sign Display was founded in 1952 by Clint L. Stein. After serving in the Air Force and returning from World War II, Clint started working at Ralph’s Neon. He later purchased it and named it Hi-way Sign Company, largely because it was located on Highway 212 and the company had many billboard locations across the state. In 1972, the name of the company was changed to Stein Sign Display. Mark Stein, the current owner and son of Clint, began his career in the sign industry in 1980. In 2014, Stuart Stein (son of Mark, grandson to Clint), started as General Manager of Stein Sign Display. Insider interviewed Stuart Stein.
Can you provide us a description of your billboard plant and operations?
Stein Sign Display was originally named “Hi-Way” sign company because of the location of the actual building—located on highway 212. However, at the time, the company also had several hundred billboard locations across the state of South Dakota. Due to the Highway Beautification Act, many of the billboard locations had to be removed because of the legislation. As it stands today, Stein Sign Display is one of the largest privately owned billboard companies in South Dakota with approximately 175 billboards, including 1 digital billboard in Watertown, SD. In addition, Stein Sign Display is a full service sign company that provides signage for all of NE South Dakota, including into North Dakota and Minnesota. Our parent company, ESCO Manufacturing, is a wholesale sign company that is under the same ownership, but sells wholesale to sign companies nationwide. ESCO specializes in custom signage and bulk ordering. With over 75,000 square feet of production space and 2 production facilities, ESCO is capable of meeting any signage need. One of the plants is dedicated solely to channel letters. In 2017, we will celebrate our 65th anniversary in business.
Do you have digital signs in your inventory?
Yes, 1. It is a 10×30, double sided sign located in Watertown, SD. Here’s a short video about this sign.
Which manufacturer did you use?
Daktronics was used for our digital billboard. They are the best in the world and we will always use them for any future purchase.
Your website news talks about a recent acquisition you made. Tell us about your purchase of Dozy’s Signs and how your business will benefit?
We purchased 65 billboards from Dozy’s Signs and Neon on 9/30/16. This purchase allows our company to have a huge presence along the I-90 stretch near Chamberlain, SD. As mentioned, with this purchase, Stein Sign Display is now one of the largest (if not the largest) privately owned billboard company in South Dakota.
