Colossal Media is the largest provider of hand painted wallscapes in the US. The company was formed in 2004 and specializes in public art murals, commercial murals and sign painting throughout the US. Here’s an video interview with Colossal’s two founders.
Insider talked with Managing Director Kelly Peppers about the company.
Kelly how did Colossal enter the outdoor business?
It was a bit of luck, good timing, and a lot of persistence. Our founders had very different backgrounds, Adrian was the owner of Mass Appeal magazine living in NY and Paul was a walldog living in LA. In 2004 they combined their experiences and created the model for what you see here today. In the early years it was a huge challenge since the OOH world was so used to cheap and easy options. Hard work paid off since now Colossal is in really high demand and considered both a trusted traditional media platform and exciting experiential provider.

Where do you find the painters?
It’s a difficult position to fill since there is no talent pool aside from Colossal to pull from. We have a lineage that exists within our paint team that dates back to the mid 60’s and so we couple that with our in-house apprenticeship program that’s built to breed the next generation of the best walldogs the industry has ever seen, and we also look on Craig’s list.
How long does it take to paint a typical commercial project?
On average they take 5 days to complete, sometimes they go faster and sometimes they take way longer. We recently finished a 50,000 square foot mural that took 3 weeks to paint but that’s the beauty in what we do, it’s a performance and it’s amazing. There’s no telling how many stories and experiences will be had once we go to work.
What’s your favorite colossal project and why?
My favorites evolve but my most recent favorite is the campaign we did for Spotify. We were part of the conversation from the start, at the brand level, and we helped to drive the creative strategy. We love it when our clients tap into our knowledge of culture and ask us to suggest ways they can best engage their target demographic. The campaign was super local, tapping into local listening habits with the results reported on our walls – Justin Bieber was the Williamsburg winner!
