Make Sure Your Contractors Are Insured

slipMost small outdoor companies use contractors for billboard installation, vinyl changes, electric work and vegetation control.  Have you ever thought about what happen if your contractor is not adequately insured Here are two scenarios.

  • A vinyl installer is changing vinyl on a billboard or yours which is located in a car lot.  He drops a tool on which wrecks a brand new car.  Guess who’s liable if the installer does not have insurance?
  • An over-zealous vegetation control contractor gets you in hot water with city regulators by cutting down some trees which happen to be on city property.   Guess who’s liable if the contractor does not have insurance?
  • A contractor falls while installing an extension on your billboard.  Guess who may be liable?  See this New York legal case.

There are a couple things you can do to make sure your contractors have insurance.

  • Ask to see their state license.  Most states require proof of insurance to issue a license.
  • Ask your contractor to send copies of certificates for liability and workers compensation insurance.  Liability coverage should be for at least $1 million.
