Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind: Banksy

For this month’s edition of Daily Billboard’s ‘3 of a Kind’ we thought we’d share these outdoor ads that channel the dark, subversive humour of England-based street artist Banksy. Some view him as a genius and political activist, others as a vandal, but one thing’s for sure, his work has been emulated all over the world.
To prove the point first up is a billboard for stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan’s short-lived TV Land sitcom, snapped along West Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard in July 2015. The Banksy-inspired Statue of Liberty key art hints at the premise of the episodic comedy focused on a fictionalized version of the comic raising five children in a two-bedroom parliament in New York City.
The second example is for the YouTube Originals teen comedy series, Wayne, which certainly catches your eye giving passersby the middle finger along the Sunset Strip in January 2019. The Banksy homage almost looks like the billboard itself has been vandalized with graffiti and helps gives the show a rebellious quality.
The third billboard example is for Amazon Prime Video’s hit comic book TV adaptation, The Boys, and was snapped along La Brea Avenue in July 2019. This subversive key art, itself mimicking street art, features Antony Starr’s corrupt and twisted superhero ‘The Homelander’ slicing up kids with his eye beams and helps convey the gory, ultra-violent R-rated nature of the streaming platform’s series.
If you like this deadly ad creative, make sure you also check out the other Banksy-inspired billboards for The Boys
Next month we’ll be looking at three examples of attention-grabbing inter-connected billboards, but until then stay safe and well.
