Inrix Reports Traffic Down 40%

Inrix reported that for the week of March 21-27 travel volumes were 40% below normal, a decline from the previous week in which travel volumes were 30% below normal.  Commercial trucking and fleet trucking are down by 5-10%.  Here’s the Chart.

Urban areas are seeing a 60% decline in travel volumes.  Rural areas are seeing a 10-30% decline in travel volumes.   Here’s a table showing the decline in traffic volumes  for the 10 largest states.

The Inrix database measures 100 million trips per day based on cell phone data.  That’s about 9% of all the trips which are taken in the US every day.   Inrix updates the traffic figures every Monday based on the results for the previous week.

Insider’s take:  Expect traffic volumes to keep declining as social distancing is enforced.  But don’t be shy about informing clients and prospects that 60% of people and almost all commercial truckers are still driving.
