Who is Driving?

A record number of Americans . . .

More women than men

A record number of Americans have drivers’ licenses, says a new federal report.

The fastest-growing segment of drivers is 65 and older. “This age group is growing faster than any other, and is far outpacing their teenage counterparts,” said the report, based on 2016 data.

Here are highlights from just-published data analyzed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA):

  • In 2016, America had 221.7 million licensed drivers, a record high.
  • The number of licensed drivers increased in all states except Michigan, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
  • America’s 112.1 million licensed women drivers outnumbered males by 2.5 million.
  • Teen drivers continued to increase slightly for the third year in a row, rising to 8.8 million – the highest level since 2013 — but remaining at among the lowest levels since the federal government began compiling driver license data in 1963.
