Outfront Media has a unique glow in the dark billboard on Coldwater Canyon Street in LA to promote Pixar’s upcoming movie Coco. The billboard will run through November 26. The billboard uses a patented UV printing process and black lights to glow at night time which plays into the movie’s Dia de los Muertos theme. Insider talked with Carly Zipp, Senior Director of Communications, Sponsorships and Events, Outfront Media about the project.
How did the idea originate?
Disney wanted to do a black light billboard to showcase the movie and bring the colors to life. A normal board in LA only has 4 white LED lights. OUTFRONT’s crews went out to the unit, re-piped the spreader, re-wired the board and added 5 more lights, making a total of 9 lights. They also ordered special black lights, and painted the casings on all the lights black.
Disney then acquired a very special LED light from Europe through one of their own sources which OUTFRONT used in addition to the current 9, located in the middle of the board.
The whole concept came together as a way to celebrate Coco’s Dia de Los Muertos theme, a holiday originating in Mexico (and celebrated in other Hispanic regions) known for its vibrant colors.
Who printed the billboard?
Disney worked with a printer that specialized in printing vinyl with a special UV paint, that makes it glow with the blacklight (for both the blacklight and the extension).
Here’s a 20 second video showing the install and what the billboard looks like at night.
