The Pros and Cons of Hurricane Frames

Tiffin Metal Panel Free Frame

Insider has financed hurricane frames for several clients.  A hurricane frame is a backless billboard frame as opposed to a solid steel or wood billboard frame.   Here are the pros and cons of hurricane frames.

Pros:

  • Hurricane frames are half the cost because there’s not as much steel.
  • There’s no need to remove head panels prior to a storm.
  • There’s less chance of storm damage.  The vinyl will blow off a hurricane frame and the wind will blow through the frame.  There’s less chance that the monopole or head will bend or come down.

Cons

  • Vinyls must be printed with a black back in order to avoid having the sun shine through.
  • Installation can be difficult, particularly on a windy day.  A metal head stops the wind.  The wind blows through a hurricane frame which makes it difficult to strap the vinyl.  Matt Schulz of Selective Structures does not recommend hurricane frames on a sign higher 50 feet off the ground for this reason.

Insider’s take:  Hurricane frames are a good idea to protect boards in coastal areas or non-conforming boards which you cannot rebuild.  The installation hassles do not justify the cost savings in areas without storms.
