Watertown gets new sign ordinance

The Watertown, South Dakota Plan Commission approved a revised off-premises sign ordinance last Thursday according the Watertown Public Opinion.  You can find the proposed ordinance within the Plan Commission August 10 Meeting Packet.  Key off-premises sign restrictions include:

  • A 288 square foot limit on sign size which translates into a maximum sign size of 12′ by 24′.
  • 500 foot spacing between off-premise signs.
  • A prohibition on blinking signs or flashing signs.  Digital billboards will still be permitted.
  • A prohibition on vehicles which display ads.

Insider’s take:  Nice to see the city differentiate between flashing signs and billboards.  There is a huge difference because a billboard runs for 8 seconds before changing.  Insider expects to see more communities place restrictions on mobile billboards as entrepreneurs use mobile and vehicle billboards to get around restrictions.
