Jason Duff on an Advertising Success

Jason Duff, Founder – Comstor Outdoor and Small Nation

Billboard Insider is running a series of interviews with Comstor Outdoor Founder and CEO Jason Duff.  Comstor operates a 500 face out of home plant in Ohio and Indiana.  Last week Jason talked about how creative sets you apart.  Today he talks about an advertising success.

How do you come up with good creative?

We take our cue from the success of great campaigns that are happening in the region and in the state and around the country, so hats off to the people in the industry that are pushing the envelope and being bold and and unique. I think that’s what small town USA needs as well.  We work with creatives on a contract basis from around the country and we’ve also grown our own talent inhouse. In my early years I took a lot of point of pride in creative.  It’s something that’s a differentiator for the companies that put the time and energy into developing good campaigns.

Comstor Outdoor advertising client Brittany Saxton

Tell me about an out of home client you’re proud of?

We have a pizzeria.  The owner is 34 years old.  She’s mom of three kids.  She started in the pizza industry washing dishes when she was 14. Her name is Brittany Saxton and her business is 600 Downtown brick oven pizzeria. She has a pizzeria that has been on the Food Network twice and we run fun and quirky and creative billboard campaigns for her.  We did a campaign around legalizing marinara it’s got a lot of attention   She is a huge believer in her billboards and some of her billboards are in markets more than 100 miles away from her restaurant and and she has experience with people seeing a billboard, googling the restaurant reading the reviews and taking that drive to experience her food.

How have you financed your company?

We started slow and steady and have been able to bootstrap 100% of the company with the help of some traditional bank financing, have not pursued any outside capital or investors.  If you grow incrementally you can do it.  I applaud people that have pursued another model but that model wouldn’t be a good fit for me.
