Billboard Insider has added a new Engineering section to our Classified Ads. Our first entrant to Engineering is FJS Engineering, led by John Skwiot. We sat down with John to get some information on FJS Engineering, their capabilities and coverage area.
John, tell us about your background and what led you to Out of Home?
My background is in civil and structural engineering and I have been working in the building industry since 1997, with my experience split about 50/50 between construction management and engineering design. My introduction to the OOH industry happened by chance (call it a lucky break) due to an engagement with a billboard fabricator in the western US, as described below.

How long have you been working in OOH, who have you worked for and when did you start FJS Engineering?
We have been working in the OOH industry for approximately six years, beginning in 2019. As a precursor to that, my wife Stacey and I started FJS Engineering in 2011. After 8 years of running the business, we were looking to take a break and I signed on to a full-time position at the billboard fabricator mentioned above as their engineering lead. Having never worked in outdoor media prior to this point, I was pleasantly surprised at the positive interactions with the people in the industry and quickly came to enjoy the work and the working relationships. I moved out of that role and restarted FJS Engineering work in 2022, with a new focus on OOH projects. My previous employer was our first OOH client and we have continued to grow our OOH client list to the point that we now focus almost exclusively on the industry.
What engineering services do you provide to the industry?
When it comes to structural engineering, you name it. Building-mounted signs, mono- and multi-pole free-standing structures, digital kiosks and sign-repair projects, to name a few. Due to the LED panel push, we handle a significant number of static-to-digital conversion projects.
Do you work nationwide?
Our projects cover the US from coast to coast and we have the resources to complete sealed documents in all 50 states.
Can you tell us about a recent project you have worked on?
We’ve recently been working with one of our clients on creating virtual drive-through 3D models of proposed billboard installations. This technology allows for verification of sight lines and identification of visibility obstructions without having to mobilize a crane and flag to the field to represent a billboard structure. It also allows for the creation of a multitude of height and face size variations to determine which configuration would work best for visibility.
