You heard the case against QR codes on roadside billboards in Rothfelder on Signs QR codes and Readers say QR codes a bad idea. Today Query Point Founder Steve Ray explains when QR codes make sense in out of home:

We agree that QR’s should not be on billboards; In that context QR’s are probably no more effective than web addresses and phone numbers. That, however, does not mean the advertiser must give up in terms of providing a means by which consumers may respond in the moment, or, close to the moment, to the ad being viewed. We recommend our location based QR badges on buses, bus benches, service vehicles, and for real estate our property badges on real estate signs. These allow people to immediately grab information either through our app or through our bookmark-able, location based web page, we call our ‘widget’.For billboards we recommend using the simple Info Roster symbol, which does not have a QR.
