If the Philadelphia Parking Authority has their way, they will add another 45 billboards in neighborhood parking lots. Phillymag.com is reporting that the 14 billboards the PPA currently has at 4 of its Center City garages earned $60,000 so far in 2017. In the first phase of their plan the PPA would add an additional 14 signs in six neighborhoods, expecting to bring in an additional $140,000 per year.
The city amended their zoning code in 2013 which allowed for the creation of a municipal advertising program, in which advertisements promoting commercial products or political or religious ideas could appear on city-owned property. The program was intended to generate more revenue for the city and school district without raising taxes.
5th Square, a Philadelphia based political action committee, has taken exception to the PPA’s plans claiming that none of the funds will go to schools. A spokesman for the PPA said that income generated from the billboards goes to the upkeep of neighborhood parking lots.
