Billboard Insider interviewed Matthew Knee.

How did you get involved with out of home advertising?

I was first introduced to the out-of-home business in 2005 by a gentleman I met who was trying to develop a large format digital screen in Times Square.  I was intrigued and began to work with him.  A few years late we co-founded a digital media company.  During those formative years I had the chance to meet many folks and learn a great deal about developing signage.

What’s a challenging development you’ve done and what did you learn?

All projects have their own unique challenges associated with them.  Whether that is picking up sign sections high into the skies above the sidewalks of a crowded city, finding adequate power for a roadside billboard in a rural area or working with municipal organizations to cut through red tape to bring a project to completion on time and within budget. I have experienced all of these as well as countless other challenges and the biggest lesson is that there is always a solution if you think pragmatically and work collaboratively.  What makes me successful is being able to identify a solution and execute.  That is truly something I enjoy.

What trends are you seeing in out of home permitting and development?

A: 2024 albeit a busy year was not as strong as 2023 for new signage developments.  I think a lot of that has to do with slower than anticipated third party media revenues throughout 2024, the high cost of construction as well as the upcoming election.  Many individuals who I am speaking with have a lot of projects in the planning stages which will correlate to a busy 2025 and beyond.
