The Methuen, MA city council is considering a proposal for a new committee to oversee the advertisements that appear on billboards. The Eagle-Tribune reports on the the proposal which took place at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
One city council member expressed concern over a billboard that advertised an app used to locate marijuana stores for users. The discussion that followed included a suggestion that everyone who owns a billboard would have to come before the proposed committee and explain what would go on the billboard. The hope would be that the billboard committee could be a buffer to what kind of advertisements appear in Methuen.
The council expects to see a formal proposal in the near future.
Insider’s Take – Fortunately, the city attorney was at the meeting and already is expressing his concerns about First Amendment rights. Any ordinance they put together would most likely run into a legal challenge. Will provide further updates as they become available.
