US Out of Home Grows Slower than the Economy in 2Q 2024

Good news and bad news in the 2Q 2024 US out of home revenue figures.

  • The good news is that out of home growth of 3.4% exceeded inflation of 3.0% in the second quarter of 2024.
  • The bad news is the US out of home industry failed to match the US economy in 2Q 2024.  US out of home revenues grew 3.4% in the second quarter of 2024 while the US nominal GDP grew 5.2%.  Here’s the data.

Here’s an eye-opening table comparing the growth in the roadside billboard revenues of the three largest out of home companies over the past year.  This is roadside billboards only and does not include transit or airports.  Lamar is the only company whose US billboard revenue growth exceeds inflation over the past year.  Would someone please explain to Billboard Insider why Clear Channel Outdoor’s US billboards are doing so poorly?

  1. This is not news but your one of the first to print the truth
    Over past 25 years OOH/Dooh Growth only outpaced US growth rate 2 times
    When I hear leaders in this industry go crazy with press releases about projected growth of 4 % or 4.2 growth rate last year which is the rate of inflation.
    Let’s get real and understand many company in this space will go out of business or sell.
    That’s the reality of a maturing marketplace but you can’t put up 30% more screens with 4 % growth
    Math does not work
    Sorry for the negative feedback but this industry needs more voices in leadership roles discuss the realties
