Admiral Outdoor operates a billboard plant in Duplin County in eastern North Carolina. The company was started in 2006 when owner Pete Murphy was in need of advertising for his family’s hotel, restaurant and convenience store located off I-40 at Exit 385 in Wallace, NC. When he started pricing rates for billboards he discovered is was more beneficial to build his own billboards rather than rent them. Insider talked with Missie Wells of Murphy Investment Group about the company.
Tell us about your plant?
We have grown to 19 Structures on I-40 located between Exits 384 and Exit 373. All of our sign structures on I-40 are size 10’6” x 36’. In addition, we own 22 Structures on highways around Duplin County including Hwy 41, Hwy 11, Hwy 50 and Hwy 903 with varying sign sizes from 8’ x 16’ up to 12’ x 24’.
What’s the North Carolina outdoor market like?
Our market in Eastern NC is strategically located between the beaches and our state capitol, Raleigh. This gives opportunity for our advertisers to reach both locals traveling our area regularly and the large tourist population traveling to our many NC beaches.
Is there seasonality and are your boards facing traffic heading to the beaches an easier sell than boards facing traffic leaving beaches?
We do find some seasonality in our advertisers expressing an interest in reaching the beach traffic. As a general rule, the boards heading east toward the beaches tend to rent faster but we have been able to entice the advertisers in seeing the value of the west traffic leaving the beaches.
Have you ever had storm damage to your boards?
No, we have been fortunate and have never sustained any storm damage.
