Nathan Sterner, Vision Outdoor

Vision Outdoor is only independent digital billboard operator serving the Baltimore DMA.  The Company recently hired Nathan Sterner as their General Manager so we had a chance to get caught up with Nathan to talk about his background and the trajectory for Vision Outdoor.

Nathan, tell us about your background and how that led you to Vision Outdoor

My first job directly after graduating from Syracuse University in 1989 was with Adams Outdoor – Lehigh Valley. I still remember one of the executives saying to me that if I lasted 6 months, there was a good chance I could remain in the business the rest of my professional life – and here we are. More recently, I led the team at Apple Outdoor in York, PA as President until we successfully divested to Lamar in 2022. My continued passion for the business kept me involved and I eventually landed here at Vision Outdoor in Baltimore, MD.

How about some details on Vision Outdoor.

At this time, Vision has a handful of 14 x 48 digital assets located along the heavily travelled expressways of I-83, I-95 and I-395. We also have one (1) single 14 x 48 static face along I-95. We will actively pursue new opportunities and new revenue streams to further our growth in the middle-Atlantic region.

Does the company have a preferred manufacturer for your digitals?

We are currently using all Daktronics units. I have to say that my experience with Daktronics over the years, (Apple Outdoor used them exclusively, as well) has always been a very positive one. I very much appreciate the relationships that I have furthered and maintained within their organization.

What are your goals for 2025?

We have recently launched and initiated utilizing the Apparatix software platform to assist us with more efficient management of our inventory. Also maybe even more importantly, Apparatix enables us to easily and effectively provide detail-oriented proposals quickly to our local customers, as well as agencies and national platforms. We will heavily focus on selling locally and keeping the close-to-the-customer relationship mentality in the forefront of our mindset as we start 2025. Increasing local sales by 7-10% is an ambitious goal, but one that is certainly achievable. We will endeavor to believe that billboards continue to be an effective, yet relatively inexpensive media choice for advertisers.
