Waterloo gives Lamar 2nd chance on denied billboard permit

Waterloo CityLogoThe Courier reports that the Waterloo, Iowa City Council has agreed to give Lamar a second chance to seek approval for a new digital billboard at San Marnon Drive and Sears Street in Waterloo.  The City Council voted 4-1 in favor of the board on May 2 but a supermajority of 6 votes was required to overturn the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation to deny the permit.  1 city councilman had resigned earlier in the week and another was recovering from a heart attack.  The motion to overturn the Planning Commission recommendation was doomed to fail no matter what in the absence of the two council members.

The Planning Commission voted 4-1 in April to turn down the permit for a 45 foot tall digital billboard due to concerns about the density of billboards and signs along that segment of San Marnan.

Insider’s take:  Seems unfair to make a vote stand when there weren’t enough members present for the vote to count.
