Some billboard advertisers try to be witty and irreverent in order to be noticed. Insider saw this copy on a Georgia billboard last week. This ad was clever and eye catching.
The strategy can backfire however. A North Carolina jewelry store had to apologize last month after a firestorm over a jewelry billboard which said “Sometimes it’s OK to throw rocks at girls…” This twitter response was typical.
Insider’s take: Humor can backfire. Get an opinion from several different people if you are worried about ad copy offending someone.
