• Rate This Board by Greg Callaham

    Rate This Board allows a billboard designer to rate a random piece of billboard artwork using the following scale: 1 (not good), 2 (below average), 3 (average), 4 (very good), 5 (great). Then the designer talks about what they may have done differently for outdoor advertising.     Mattress Stores Are Greedy – Rating 1 (not good)

    • This idea is a roll of the dice. It looks so much like a public service announcement, right down to the web address, that it is easily ignored. Perhaps someone who is constantly outraged over the alleged greed of mattress stores would remember the URL so they could “learn the truth.” But how many passers-by is that?


    • The URL leads to a specially built web site for Tuft & Needle. It’s full of info to enlighten the unwary mattress-buying public. But this billboard falls far short of effective outdoor.


    • I’ll give it credit for large letters with high contrast between them and the background, but that’s where I stop. The text is too thin and some is too small to read easily. The concept faceplants like Granny at the skate park for the first time. It earns a 1 (not good).
