Pigeons and Billboards

A reader recently asked Insider how to keep pigeons off billboards.  We are reprinting a post we wrote a couple years ago on the subject.

Insider has problems with pigeons roosting on his Circle City Outdoor billboards.  Lisa Atkinson of Premium Outdoor tells Insider that giant buzzards have a fondness for her billboards.  Insider knows of an operator who once found a dead man inside a billboard structure but that’s a story for another day.

Insider asked David English the Sales and Operations Manager of Ad-Trend, Inc. for his thoughts about keeping birds off billboards.  Ad-Trend, Inc is an independent outdoor advertising company with a 100 face plant in Kansas City.

David, do you have issues with birds roosting on billboards?

Yes this is a problem we have.  As I’m sure many plants will confirm, we only have this problem on some boards.  Obviously these boards are filthy and the least desirable locations for our team to post.  I think it is important to recognize that the droppings the birds leave behind is not only undesirable and difficult to work around, it is also a safety hazard.

horned-owlWhat are the best ways to keep birds off billboards?

The success we have had on these boards usually includes some sort of owl decoy on the board.  We have tried a variety of repellents and while they do work, they are also expensive.  The owl decoys usually work best for us.  We have spoken to our guys about the dangerous conditions created by the birds.  They are aware that if a board starts to become a roosting/resting place for the animals, they are to take measures to prevent it from becoming a popular place for the birds to land.  They have owl decoys with them and use them as needed.  I feel preventing a board from becoming a landing spot is very important.

Insider has used netting and landing spikes as well as owls.  Every little bit helps.  If you’re looking for bird mitigation ideas try Birdstoppers.com.  They’ve got everything from plastic owls to netting to roost inhibitors to electronic sound repellers.
