Jon Odom runs Productivity Fabricators, a Richmond, Indiana company which specializes in producing outdoor advertising structures.  He was a speaker at the recent OAAA safety meeting as well as the IBOUSA meeting.  Insider asked Odom for tips on steel monopole preventative maintenance and this was Odom’s answer:

  • A periodic inspection is important.  Insider will write more about this later.

  • Rust is a steel billboard’s biggest enemy  You should inspect boards for rust.  Mainly around base of column.  Many signs built over the years do not have concrete above the soil.  If you have a fertilized flower bed at the base of the sign the water, soil and fertilizer can mix and create rust.  Go down to where you can see the concrete and inspect.  If you walk up to a sign and can see concrete at the base it’s a good thing.  If the concrete is separating fill it with tar.
  • If a bolt is loose throw it away.  If a bolt is properly tightened it won’t come loose unless it’s experienced heavy wind stress.  If you find a loose one throw it away and use another.
