Gabe Oliverio’s Predictions for 2019

Today out of home investment banker Gabe Oliverio of Johnsen Fretty makes 5 predictions for 2019.

  • 2018 saw the rise of mid-size, but well-capitalized, outdoor companies which we expect to continue in 2019. We also anticipate new groups entering the space in 2019, providing additional inertia to a strong acquisitions environment.

  • Smart City platforms that combine outdoor media + technology (or other public amenities) will continue expanding in major metro areas. Look for more cities to embrace these platforms as a way to subsidize amenities for their citizens and generate much-needed revenue. Look for non-“Big 3” companies to lead the way in this space.

  • We expect Clear Channel Outdoor to have its majority shareholder bankruptcy issues behind it in first half of 2019. Look for CCO to explore spinning off additional markets (or perhaps its entire outdoor division) to one or more emerging players.

  • Programmatic buying enters the 2nd inning of its expansion, led by Intersection’s Place Exchange and Vistar Media.

  • Big markets like Los Angeles and Las Vegas will make headlines as they modify sign regulations, particularly as it pertains to digital.
