Insider caught up with the owner of Riley Outdoor, Robert Moore.

Robert, you have ownership interests in both Riley Outdoor and Patriot Outdoor.  Is the strategy to sell inventory as one group of boards serving Eastern North Carolina or do the companies market separately?
Patriot Outdoor and Riley Outdoor do overlap in various markets in Eastern NC,
but we always try to make sure we give the client the best available inventory without
regard to the ownership of the board. We often find that we are able to provide clients with
adequate billboard coverage by offering them a combination of Riley, Patriot as well as Interstate Outdoor inventory (Patriot Outdoor is owned 50% by Robert Moore, 50% owned by Warren Stancil who owns Interstate Outdoor).
What have been new developments at Riley over the past year?
We have not had much going on in the last year. While we have added a few faces to the Riley Outdoor inventory, our main concentration over the last year has been with Patriot Outdoor as we constructed 60 new faces to our existing inventory.

Are you looking at additional digital opportunities?

We are always looking at additional digital opportunities as we grow the business. Digital takes more time and evaluation as we have tried to learn from watching other Outdoor Operators deploy new digital locations just to say they are adding digital inventory.

Tell us about the digital you do own.

We deployed our first digital face in Greenville, NC in November 2007 which was a leap of faith at the time for a small outdoor company to jump into Digital Out of Home. This was 10’x30’ Daktronics Digital that is still in service today. We were excited about the future of digital billboards then as we are today.

Has the regulatory environment settled down?  It was a very active year.

I don’t think that I have ever seen the regulatory environment settled in my 21 years in this Business.  It is always active in NC with local and state authorities evaluating sign regulations frequently. We try to be involved in that process as much as we can to insure that outdoor advertising is allowed and has a voice in those regulations.
