Billboards for Safety

  By Ken Klein, OAAA

As a high-traffic holiday approaches, the nation’s road-safety agency will communicate with the public via digital and standard billboards.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to boost seat belt use among young people.  Half of “tweens” who died in car crashes were not using seat belts (2011-2015).

Digital billboards will display buckle-up safety messages May 26 through 29, the Memorial Day weekend.

The safety effort is co-sponsored by The Ad Council, which also arranged for printed billboards.  Orders “sold out.”

Meanwhile, the Colorado Department of Transportation won recognition for its safety messages displayed on billboards and other out of home formats.

On May 16, the OBIE Awards were announced by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA).  Colorado DOT’s safety ads earned awards in three OBIE categories:  Custom Installation, Nonprofits & Public Service, and Integrated Multi-Media. See all winners at obieawards.org.
