Tunney Art Hits NYC Billboards To Celebrate Landmarks

LandmarkThe NYC Landmarks 50 Alliance and OUTFRONT Media are working with artist Peter Tunney to run a billboard art series highlighting New York City landmarks. You can read a mediavillage post about the project from OUTFRONT Media’s Executive Vice President of Strategic Planning & Development, Andy Sriubas here. Insider talked with Carly Zipp of OUTFRONT Media about the project.

Carly, tell us about the project.  How is Outfront involved?

To celebrate the 1965 NYC Landmark Law, OUTFRONT Media partnered with the Landmarks50 to run artwork on our billboard properties by the world-renowned artist, Peter Tunney, that features artistic images of every NYC landmark building. We worked with Peter to come up with the idea for a billboard series to recognize the NYC Landmarks50 Alliance’s campaign, “Honor our Past, Imagine our Future,” and the efforts of the organization’s founder, Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, a longtime advocate for city arts and culture.

Where will the art be shown?

OUTFRONT has displayed and will continue to promote Tunney’s artwork at fifteen busy locations such as Yankee Stadium, the Manhattan Bridge and the West Side Highway. The goal is to highlight New York City’s landmarks on a grand scale and to make the campaign a part of the cityscape.

What do the billboards look like?

The billboards feature inspiring phrases, such as “Gratitude,” Don’t Panic,” and “The Time is Always Now,” comprised of artistic images of literally every NYC landmark building. They are based on original collages by Tunney that included hundreds of tiny cutout pictures from Diamonstein-Spielvogel’s book, The Landmarks of New York. We were very proud to be a part of this project, and only OUTFRONT’s iconic locations could make this come to life on a larger scale.
