This month Daily Billboard blog’s ‘3 of a kind’ brings you three examples of movies and TV shows paying homage and leveraging other outdoor marketing campaigns to get attention in the city skyline.

First up is one of my favourite copycat spoofs from June 2011, ‘Bridlemaids’, with the animated My Little Pony series striking a similar pose and recreating the key art for the hit big screen comedy Bridesmaids that had filled the skies the previous month during May 2011. This fun billboard at the bottom of L.A.’s Barham Boulevard stood out to even more to adults and parents driving by not just because of its nostalgia factor, but because it creatively referenced an R-Rated movie for the children’s show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Next up is the season three billboard for the Comedy Central show, Nathan For You starring Nathan Fielder, photographed along the West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip in October 2015. This key art reproduced cover-for-cover a billboard from the sophomore season outdoor ad campaign for NBC’s The Blacklist from September 2014, which featured James Spader’s ‘Red Reddington’ gracing the covers of iconic magazines likeTime, GQ, Wired, The New Yorker and Rolling Stone publications. And the third and final example is for another movie featuring Melissa McCarthy, the espionage comedy, Spy. This spoof billboard was captured high above Wilshire Boulevard in May 2015 emulating the James Bond/007 theatrical release artwork for Skyfall which filled L.A.’s skies around October 2012.

These fun copycat ad creatives can really make passersby look twice, and they do say imitation is the highest form of flattery, what do you think?
