New York City has a 3.9% commercial rent tax which applies to billboards and advertising signs.  The tax applies to businesses south of 96th street with an annual gross rent paid of at least $250,000.  Two city council members are introducing legislation to exempt the rental of Broadway billboards from the rent tax according to capitalnewyork.com.

  1. Another twist to the axiom, OOH is the only media which can be legislated out of business. Never lose sight of its presence. Taxation is a back door means to weed out locations. On the other hand, taxation can be a welcomed action legitimizing you inventory. Once payment is made to the gov it’s more difficult for any judge to accept a changer to its legitimacy. Taxation recognizes its legal existence. I typically welcome taxes on ooh inventory.
