Safety Matters

Insider calculates that falls have accounted for 56% of outdoor advertising accidents reported to OSHA over the past 15 years and electrocutions have accounted for 31% of the outdoor advertising accidents reported to OSHA over the past 15 years.  Two news items from last week reinforce the importance of safety training to prevent falls and electrocutions.

A Eugene Oregon based independent contractor, Gregory Jenkins, fell about 75 fell to his death while working on a billboard in Grand Ronde, OR.  Insider learned that Mr. Jenkins has worked for several billboard companies in Oregon and Washington.  The structure he was working on had a safety cable/anchor a foot or two away from him at the time of the fall. He was not tied off at the time of the accident.  He died at the scene, according to Polk County sheriffs.   Investigators from the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are looking into the accident.  More details at Statesman Journal and Oregon Live.

Cal/OSHA has issued three citations totaling $32,345 in penalties to Outfront Media for serious safety violations after a worker suffered third-degree burns when a metal pole he was using to install a sign came into contact with an overhead power line.  the worker suffered serious burns to 25% of his body.
